5 DIY Projects to Finish Before Winter Hits

Let’s face it: We live in the Midwest. It’s not if it’s going to snow — it’s when. Winter weather like snow, sleet, ice and freezing temperatures can wreak havoc on your home and expose previously-unknown issues. Instead of discovering these issues when it’s already too late, take these precautionary measures and prepare your home before the winter cold truly hits.

  1. Give your outdoor furniture and appliances — chairs, tables and grills — their last summer clean and then pack them away for the winter. If you don’t have a shed, garage, basement or other storage space, cover them with a weather-proof tarp. That way, your outdoor space will be clean and ready for barbecues and pool parties when spring swings back our way. Need to haul your stuff to a storage unit? No worries — just download Bungii and call a truck on demand. Use our referral code, RN20, to get 20% off your first trip!
  2. Check and clean your gutters. Throughout the year, debris like sticks or leaves may have collected in your gutters. Clear them out before snow and ice weigh them down.
  3. You may need to enlist a professional for this task, but make sure your furnace is working and ready for winter. You don’t want to be shivering in the January freeze while your furnace is out of commission.
  4. Inspect your windows for cracks, gaps or holes where that nippy winter air could sneak in. If necessary, caulk these imperfections to make sure that the heat keeps your house warm instead of escaping outside.
  5. Take care of any exterior tasks, like painting the front of your house or raking the leaves — especially if you are considering selling during winter. The last thing you want to do is postpone your home search just because you didn’t get aesthetic tasks done in time before winter hits.
